The 50,000 acres of Kerr Lake Reservoir (or Buggs Island Lake if you are a local Virginian) was developed as a result of the construction of the Kerr Dam which was completed in October 1952 by the Army Corp of Engineers. The Dam construction was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1944 to prevent flooding from the Roanoke River in Roanoke Rapids, NC after a 1940 flood caused damages resulting in costs upward of $5 million. John H Kerr Dam is the 4th largest dam in the United States. Creating the dam resulted in a win-win situation for the surrounding towns in Virginia and North Carolina alike. Not only does the dam provide electricity for the area but it created Kerr Lake which allowed for recreational activities which has made Kerr Lake a popular area for boating, fishing and water activities.
